NOTE — WE WILL OPEN ON MAY 1 TO SUBMISSIONS. OUR 2020 PUBLISHING SLOT IS FULL. WE’LL BE READING FOR 2021.
Undertow Publications only publishes a few books a year. Regrettably, then, we have to turn down good work. We publish in hardcover, trade paperback, and eBook, though not all projects will be published in all formats. So as to not waste your time and our time, please make yourself familiar with our books.
Our aesthetic is literary; incorporating the fabulist, the uncanny, the dark, the weird, the horrific, the numinous, the surreal, the gnostic, the esoteric, and the avant-garde. Strange tales for strange times. It’s that liminal area where genre and literary fiction meet.
We are not interested in any of the familiar genre tropes: vampires, zombies, werewolves, etc. But you already knew that, didn’t you? Ghosts? Hell, yes. We like ghosts and hauntings.
We accept submissions from anyone—regardless of race, gender, or sexuality—and think it is imperative to promote new writing from a diverse cross-section of society. Agented and non-agented submissions are welcome.
WHAT WE WANT
We are known for our short story collections, but are now considering novellas, and short novels. See below for specifics.
SHORT STORY COLLECTIONS
We are looking for previously unpublished English-language short story collections from writers, of any age, race, gender or experience. We are especially interested in first collections. Collections can have previously published work, but we would like the final manuscript to consist of at least 25% previously unpublished work, and be at least 50,000 words in total length. We pay a small advance against royalties.
We are seeking previously unpublished standalone novellas, in English. Word count should be between 17,500 - 42,000 words. We offer a small advance against royalties.
We are now open to short novel submissions, in English. Emphasis on short. We like short novels. Our sweet spot is 45,000 - 70,000 words. We pay an advance against royalties.
SUBMITTING YOUR WORK
Do NOT e-mail your submission. At least not at first. We want your original submission to be a short sample of your work, via regular post.
Please mail 2 or 3 sample stories or chapters (no more than 15,000 words) along with an introductory cover letter to:
1905 Faylee Crescent
*Note–there is no need to mail submissions priority post, or some other expensive method, as we will acknowledge receipt. You can always query to see if we’ve received it.
Do NOT send the whole manuscript. Please ensure you include an e-mail address for our response, so that we may acknowledge receipt of your submission. If we like your samples, we will ask for the full manuscript, via e-mail. Response times vary, so please be patient. If you haven’t heard from us within 3 months, please query.
**Further Note—if mailing a hardcopy is a financial hardship, please contact us.
